Time runs fast and therewith the time searching for smart city solutions for a better mobility in urban areas. There are just three days left for every interested person or Start-Up to submit their innovative and sustainable solution within the Smart Mobility Solutions Contest.
Closing time will be: Friday, the 31st of July, end of day.
By now we count more than 60 solutions, separated in existing innovative products from companies and many well thought visions from private persons. All have the potential of improving or revolutionizing Munich’s and other metropolitan cities' mobility. For the last time I am presenting one idea from each category: company and private person.

As you might have seen already it is not going to be an easy decision for the jury members. On the 6th of August, mobility and innovation experts from MAN, the City of Munich, MVG, m+p e-Mobility, Siemens, Fraunhofer IAO and the innovative publishing house Capscovil will have to decide who the winners will be.

To boost your motivation in making the most of the last 3 days and submit or improve your contribution, we remind you what prizes you can win:
  • First Place for Private Persons: Tesla testdrive (One day sponsored by m+p e-mobility shop in Munich)*
  • First Place for Companies: 2 Day Presence with Demo-Pod at the IAA** “New Mobility World” in Frankfurt
EXTRA: speaking slot in the „Startup Zone“ (10 minutes pitch)
Check out the complete list of awards HERE

*For the participants that cannot pick-up their prizes in Munich, we offer an Amazon voucher in value of 100 €

Wearable for Elderly Mobility - “Why does Smart Mobility have to be about vehicles?” – by Kate
Picture
Most elderly people have regular routines and a small number of places they need to go to. But, things like road routes, changes to bus routes and times can be very confusing and difficult to communicate to them. This idea is for a very simple watch device that the elderly just need to charge.

The watch interface has a choice of up to 6 journeys that the elderly user regularly takes. This information can be entered online remotely into a website by the elderly person’s family members or friends for them. On the day the elderly person clicks they are given simple arrow commands with number of footsteps. Additionally they are given advices on buses/trams/underground routes to take and distance to stop, e.g. First alert - Bus 50, Direction: Berlin Zentrum, 20 steps ahead; Second alert - Get off 5 in stops, Stop: Hermengasse

The app will update the instructions based on any planned road works; regular and unexpected changes to bus routes, delays etc.; and information from Waze and other crowdsourced platforms. So, the elderly person does not need to know the latest bus, train or subway timetable. As an add-on, if the person regularly goes to the Doctors and/or the same supermarket, the opening hours of these places could be integrated into the wearable.

Scrooser - move ahead. The unique mobility solution for the urban, environmentally conscious individual.
Picture
Picture
Scrooser is Lifestyle with pioneering spirit. As a completely new vehicle category, Scrooser fulfills all demands of modern mobility in the urban environment and puts it in a nutshell. Its design is reduced to the bare essentials. The heart of the Scrooser is an electric motor (up to 1,000 W) that is integrated into the back wheel which makes it invisible for the viewer. Best of all, the team developed the intelligent impulse drive. Similar to a Pedelec, but without the pedals, the engine remembers the physical “kick-impulse” of the rider and supports him according to that. Scrooser is allowed to be driven on the sidewalk and you don’t need a driver license or a helmet. The hand-made product delights all senses distinctively but without being intrusive.

Don’t you feel you just NEED to try it? We do!

Picture
We are all really excited about the last days of the Smart Mobility Contest and of course about the winners’ decision workshop on the 6th of August.

Use the chance right now to contribute with your favourite innovation and mobility solution and win one of the unique prizes of the Smart Mobility Contest. We are looking forward to your participation!

The weeks are passing by and the ideas of how to smart up our city Munich are getting more and better every day. After 6 weeks the “Smart Mobility Solutions” Contest counts over 50 really interesting and innovative ideas and finalized concepts of possibilities how to create a more intelligent and sustainable city of the future.
From the plenty contributions, it is time again to present an idea and business concept of our participants of the Smart City Solution Contest. This time I was caught by two really sportive ideas of smart mobility.

Win-Win innovative and eco-buses - Why not being sportive and producing energy while traveling by bus?
Picture
New free of charge public buses are equipped with special energy generator pedals, which are installed on each sitting place, for passengers who may wish to do some light physical exercises by legs during their travelling time and subsequently produce some energy. Also for standing passengers there could be similar devices offered like doing exercises with the hands during the travel time.
The idea “Win Win innovative and eco-buses” may be considered as a mobile mini training center which would be very attractive and convenient especially to people who are spending many hours on transportation and instead would prefer to use that time for physical exercises. The major challenge for such buses is to design a comfortable and still appropriate environment for effective exercises.  Theoretically it is possible to expect that this produced energy could be sufficient enough to power the bus and therewith could be considered as totally environmentally friendly.  In any case, the accumulated energy could be transferred and used for other services like charging the passengers phones

ePaddle: electric propulsion for longboarder - Riding downhill all the time?
Picture
Picture
The idea for a drive unit for longboards originated in summer 2013. Inspired by Stand Up Paddling, the HYVE designers conceived a device for the electric propulsion of sports devices for long boarders, surfers and inline skaters regardless of being a beginner or complete professional.

The ePaddle delivers an impressive high force of acceleration. It is very easy to handle and if you can skate, it takes you 10 seconds to develop enough skills to have fun. Speed up to 25 mph is possible. The throttle is provided by a simple push button just like the Carrera toy race cars. You can use the ePaddle one handed, which gives you maximum freedom for carving – as soon as you are on minimum speed you can start the one hand mode. The limits and possibilities of the product are still developed. Going uphill is easy and absolutely feasible. The major killer feature is to have “downhill-like” riding fun on flat grounds. The downhill speed mark of about 100 mph will not be cracked this year … the good work will be continued!

Picture
The population of cities skyrockets and we need to find approaches to make the city life as attractive, sustainable and comfortable as possible.

The goal of the Smart Mobility Challenge is to identify such approaches and to make the best out of the combination of existing and innovative technologies. Two very innovative ideas will be presented briefly in the following – both dealing with the issue of efficiency and inner city mobility.
Category “Company”

Getting stuck in the rush hour traffic after a stressful day is probably most annoying for every driver on the way back home from work. For these situations, TankTaler is trying to provides a one-shop-solution for the most annoying issues that car drivers have to deal with in daily life. Customers purchase a device that connects to the OBD*-dongle of the car. It will collect and transfer data to the TankTaler App.
Picture
The device can localize the car and point out free parking lots that were just left by other TankTaler users nearby. Once the user found a free slot, TankTaler handles billing and payment of parking fees.

In addition, the tracking and localization service can provide traffic reports and propose an alternative faster route. However, another feature of TankTaler might even help avoid traffic jams at all. Plugged in the ODB-dongle the device can derive driving suggestions from the car’s data and provide hints for a more safe and environment-responsible driving behavior.  And that is not all. You can even further develop different functionalities and services on top of your TankTaler App!

TankTaler combines two industry trends: data analysis and connected car. With this combination, they can provide us with great solutions for a more sustainable and more efficient future. Join the Idea-Contest and find out more!

In Munich the police is notorious for fining people at night who cycle without lights. That’s why almost everyone cycles with turned-on lights in the darkness. Immense numbers of kilowatts are produced and wasted that way night by night in Munich. So, the idea presented here by Martin from Munich is simple, smart and offers an obvious solution: generating and storing power while riding a bike
Picture

Riding a bike is easy, but still the cyclist needs quite a lot of power to move forward. The idea aims to recapture parts of that power, store and re-use it. The role-model for the idea is the power generation facility of spinning bikes in some eco-friendly gyms. These spinning bikes are of course fixed to the ground, so capturing and storing electricity is not a big deal.

In Martin’s vision, station-based rental bikes should be equipped with a similar energy-generating facility. When such a rental bike is returned to a station, the power generated during the ride will be transferred via the station to the grid.
The challenge of the idea is that moving bikes should be equipped with the same technical facilities as stable spinning bikes in the gyms. The outcome would be a perfectly sustainable and intelligent solution to convert human power into electricity.

Do you want to support Martin’s idea? Join the contest, give him your vote and inspire us with your vision of a sustainable future mobility. We are looking forward to your participation!

ROCKCITI is helping people to stay connected 24/7 throughout the whole city by offering chargers for mobile devices. Chargers can be picked up on-the-go at so called ROCKCITI Powerbanks and returned at the next one you pass. The ROCKCITI app will show you the closest Powerbank selected according to your interests. Choose whether you want a restaurant, a gym or just a store and the Powerbank map will show you the relevant Hotspots. Never worry about the battery of your smartphone again and stay connected using ROCKCITI!

We are curious how the charger looks like and how Marc and Oliver will ensure to find a smart way of charging the devices. We already look forward to full batteries no matter where we are!

An excellent idea in the category e-Mobilty was submitted by Dor Marian. He envisions a concept that includes electrical cars, renewable energy production, energy efficiency and also economic efficiency. Again energy supply is in focus and this time it is about charging electrical cars at solar energy stations that can also feed energy into the grid. According to the availability of solar power that varies during the days and seasons, drivers get special prices and decide whether they charge their cars at that point of time or they choose to come later. Prices get higher when too little solar power is available and additional energy has to be pulled from the grid.

Dor Marian is happy to receive feedback and to further discuss the concept. He invites everyone for a constructive brainstorming session!

Smart City Solutions (SCS) - we all understand what this means, don’t we? by Isabel Oostvogel

Well, it´s time to get to know what´s behind it, so that you will be able to submit creative ideas and to win inspiring prizes within the “Smart City Solutions” Contest.

My Name is Isabel and besides my work at HYVE, the leading innovation agency in Munich and partner of this campaign, I am close to completing my studies Management of Social Innovation at the Hochschule München.
With the focus on open- and sustainable innovations in my everyday life, it is a huge pleasure to accompany the “Smart City Solutions” Contest of Ioana, a perfect combination of both.

Today´s society has to deal with new challenges. In the future, the cities of tomorrow will be asked for new ideas and innovations regarding a better and more intelligent infrastructure. They have to deal with the upcoming problems of urbanism, climate change, demographic developments and globalization. Smart cities are using the possibilities of digital technology to improve the performance of urban services and to reduce costs and resource consumption by innovative concepts. Smart mobility, as the key topic of the contest, defines the offer of an energy efficient, low-emission, comfortable and favorable mobility, which can be used intelligently by the civil society. So what we need is a future orientated metropolis. But how can we achieve this?

What can be done about the daily challenges of private and public transportation? How can mobility and traffic in a city like Munich be improved, for both the young and the elderly?

The “Smart City Solutions” Contest faces this questions and seeks innovative ideas and sustainable business models for a smarter city of tomorrow. Since the 8th of June more than 30 members have registered on the platform and submitted ideas and business concepts. To get a small glimpse of the contributions of the community and to inspire your participation, we will present a small summary every week until the end of the contest on the 31st of July 2015.

Many ideas are using technologies to improve and support the problems of the society. For example Denise Schuster initiated a Truck Parking Reservation System that wants to answer to the increasing challenges of truck drivers in Germany to find free parking spaces at the rest stops. With the platform “UnserParkplatz.de” existing systems will be improved due to its new system of reservation and payment of truck parking spaces. 3,000 parking spaces are collected by the system at more than 50 rest stops. The payment is done by SMS and the reservation will then simply be forwarded to the rest stops, where the operator blocks the parking space for the driver.

“Simple and really effective. Thank you very much!"

Another more futuristic contribution is the idea Aerial tramway by our most active member Artsvi. As there might be more space needed on the cities’ grounds the idea explains the transportation being lift up in the air. An aerial tramway network in big cities could be considered as a very effective transportation, decreasing traffic congestion as well.

“Many international concepts are dealing with the idea of flying public transportations. Also thank you for the other creative ideas Artsvi.”
As you see, the “Smart City Solutions” Contest is an opportunity for creative minds and innovative businesses to share their alternative concepts and ideas for a smarter mobility. What are your ideas?

It is worth participating! Become part of the community, share your ideas and concepts, win inspiring prizes and help the cities to shape our future: “Smart City Solutions”.

I hope to see you soon!
