The population of cities skyrockets and we need to find approaches to make the city life as attractive, sustainable and comfortable as possible.

The goal of the Smart Mobility Challenge is to identify such approaches and to make the best out of the combination of existing and innovative technologies. Two very innovative ideas will be presented briefly in the following – both dealing with the issue of efficiency and inner city mobility.

Getting stuck in the rush hour traffic after a stressful day is probably most annoying for every driver on the way back home from work. For these situations, TankTaler is trying to provides a one-shop-solution for the most annoying issues that car drivers have to deal with in daily life. Customers purchase a device that connects to the OBD*-dongle of the car. It will collect and transfer data to the TankTaler App.

The device can localize the car and point out free parking lots that were just left by other TankTaler users nearby. Once the user found a free slot, TankTaler handles billing and payment of parking fees.

In addition, the tracking and localization service can provide traffic reports and propose an alternative faster route. However, another feature of TankTaler might even help avoid traffic jams at all. Plugged in the ODB-dongle the device can derive driving suggestions from the car’s data and provide hints for a more safe and environment-responsible driving behavior.  And that is not all. You can even further develop different functionalities and services on top of your TankTaler App!

TankTaler combines two industry trends: data analysis and connected car. With this combination, they can provide us with great solutions for a more sustainable and more efficient future. Join the Idea-Contest and find out more!

In Munich the police is notorious for fining people at night who cycle without lights. That’s why almost everyone cycles with turned-on lights in the darkness. Immense numbers of kilowatts are produced and wasted that way night by night in Munich. So, the idea presented here by Martin from Munich is simple, smart and offers an obvious solution: generating and storing power while riding a bike

Riding a bike is easy, but still the cyclist needs quite a lot of power to move forward. The idea aims to recapture parts of that power, store and re-use it. The role-model for the idea is the power generation facility of spinning bikes in some eco-friendly gyms. These spinning bikes are of course fixed to the ground, so capturing and storing electricity is not a big deal.

In Martin’s vision, station-based rental bikes should be equipped with a similar energy-generating facility. When such a rental bike is returned to a station, the power generated during the ride will be transferred via the station to the grid.
The challenge of the idea is that moving bikes should be equipped with the same technical facilities as stable spinning bikes in the gyms. The outcome would be a perfectly sustainable and intelligent solution to convert human power into electricity.
